Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brita 42557 Riviera Water Pitcher, WhiteCustomer Review: Algae anyone? Summary: 3 Stars
Water is a vital component for survival of every living thing including algae. That is exactly what settles on the bottom our Brita Riviera pitcher. We actually own two kinds of pitchers the Deluxe II and the Riviera. We use it at the same time however the Deluxe II does not have the algae problem. It also isn't as ergonomic as the Riviera and it requires more strength especially when full. I do wash both pitchers with every filter change but I have to wash the Riviera once more in between changes. One more advice. If you're interested in the Chrome model to match your stainless steel appliances be prepared to constantly polish it due to the water spots. My friend has one and at first I was envious, but now I rather be less fashionable than freak out over the visible water spots. I do like to taste of the filtered water but still haven't found the perfect Brita pitcher systems. For now, I must compromise.
The only reason I gave it three stars because it is very ergonomic, otherwise I would give it a one star rating.
Customer Review: I like the indicator but not the pitcher. Summary: 3 Stars
The indicator works well although it's a bit over-engineered. It would have been fine to provide a mechanical indicator into which you dial the expiration date of the filter. This would last forever as opposed to the (claimed) 5-year lifespan of the electronic indicator. The pitcher is a different story. Not nearly as well made as other Brita pitchers. The thumb level to open the pitcher is awkward. You must be careful not to fill the reservoir above the indicator line. The hinged flap on the front of the pitcher has enough resistance so that it does not swing open automatically.
Customer Review: Water leak Summary: 3 Stars
Ok, the actual filter inside the Pitcher works great, the water has a big improvement in taste after the process, but this pitcher has a MAJOR design problem. If the unfiltered water compartment is full when you are pouring water, the unfiltered water will be poured down to your cup together with your clean water. Seriously, that just make the whole process of filtering the water useless!
Customer Review: digital change filter indicator is misleading Summary: 3 Stars
I bought the pitcher with the digital change filter indicator thinking that it would tell you when you've filtered 40 gallons of water. However, it just indicates that the filter needs changing after it counts 8 weeks, regardless of how much water you have filtered. No thanks, I'll take the manual sticker method and save some money, this is a useless feature.
Customer Review: Chorine Taste Persists Summary: 2 Stars
I observed Brita being used on the TV series The Biggest Loser thus decided to give it a try. I suppose the purpose was less for cost per glass than it was for the elimination of the accumulation of plastic bottles and containers.
Preps: There is a process to prepare the first batch, such as soaking the filter in cold water for 15 minutes prior to use. Also, the filter must be rotated within the assembly to find a snug fit, almost as if it was keyed. Finally, the first couple batches of filtered water are tossed. These steps were done.
Use: With anticipation, I was hoping for a chlorine-free taste, but that did not happen. The chlorine taste and smell were immediately noticeable. In all fairness, the packaging does not claim to make bad water good, or chlorinated water pure. It is no fault of the product, just that removing the chlorine in our system will not be this simple.
Caveat: Having used purified (reversed osmosed) water previous to using Brita, any amount of chorine would have been noticeable. Had I been accustomed to tap water, then switched to Brita, the review might have been completely different.
