Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Brita 35548 Classic PitcherCustomer Review: The old one was better Summary: 3 Stars
I wanted a replacement for my old Brita pitcher and I wanted something simple, without the need for fancy-shmancy batteries/electronics - after all this is just a PITCHER!
This one was the one most similar to the one I had. However, unlike the one I had before, this one does not keep the lid on when there is water in the reservoir trickling through the filter. This means that you can't use the pitcher easily while it's refilling unless you remember to push the lid down with one hand while you pour with the other. Not doing so will result in a disastrous spill each time as the lid will slip off pouring water all over.
Not sure how/why, but the earlier version of this pitcher had a nicely designed fit that this would not happen. Had it been available, I would have purchased it.
Customer Review: Great Tasting Water Summary: 3 Stars
I have a love hate relationship with this pitcher. The water is very good. But, the pitcher is small and if you drink a lot of water, get a bigger pitcher. I only recommend this for a single person. My son and I have to constantly refill it because we drink a lot of water. When you tip it over, the filter can come out very easily, so you have to be careful and hold the lid when you pour. You have to wait for all the water to filter through, before you use it.
Customer Review: Soot is left in the bottom of pitcher--not my idea of "pure" Summary: 2 Stars
I could no longer stand the smell and taste of chlorination in the city water, so I bought this Brita pitcher and some replacement filters. The water from the pitcher tastes just like water should taste (not like much!). However, as some other reviews have noted, there are fine dark specks at the bottom of my pitcher. I soaked the filter and followed all of the directions for preparation of my pitcher/filter just as the instructions provided described. After multiple (10+) fillings of the pitcher (not including the first two I "threw out" per the instructions), this fine powder/specks keep appearing. I'm a grad. student (read: I'm cheap), so I haven't thrown out this filter and tried a new one. I am hoping it is just this one filter, but from the reviews, I am thinking that this is going to be a recurring problem. I have not tasted the "carbon" or "charcoal" taste that others have mentioned. But I also don't stir up the water in the pitcher and I don't drink the last 1/4 to 1/3 of the water in the pitcher. This seems to keep the soot in the bottom of the pitcher and out of my glass.
The pitcher is pretty wide, but I don't have one of those fancy side-by-side refrigerators. So, width isn't an issue. Also, the handle seems very flimsy. I think this will probably be the first thing to break. The filtering reservoir could fit into the rest of the pitcher a little tighter, but I haven't had an issue with it falling out or coming loose during pouring. The filter does fit into the reservoir very firmly. It is a little tough to get it out, even.
Bottom line: The pitcher removes even Gainesville's nasty taste/smell from the water, but the construction of the pitcher is questionable (especially for the price of the pitcher!) and I am simply trading one impurity (chlorine taste) for another (soot). Buyer beware.
Customer Review: Filtered water Still tastes like tap Summary: 2 Stars
Recently bought the 10-cup large pitcher plus 2 filters from Costco with a coupon. Will be returning them. The system seems ok, but the main function and reason for purchasing this product is not satisfactorily met: the "filtered" water tastes close to exactly the same as from the tap itself, and you may wonder - the answer is yes we followed each step-by-step direction methodically. We thought perhaps give it a few times. So we dumped out quite a few pitcher-fulls of water in an attempt to see if it was just that the filter wasn't getting going. This wasn't the case.
Too bad, the Brita water I tasted in a different part of the country
tasted well - and that may be more that their tap water tasted better. Disappointed. Will go back to refilling at the store.
Customer Review: Bummer! Summary: 1 Stars
I was disappointed by this product. It takes such a long time to get this thing up and running! First, you have to wash the thing by hand -- no dishwasher (??) -- then soak the filter for 15 minutes. Then you have to rinse the filter. Then you have to make and discard two while pitchers of water, which takes a looooong time. I had finally gotten down to my second pitcher (*whew*) when I tilted the pitcher just a little bit to the side, and wham! the filter fell out, right down into my garbage disposal. Yuck! And I had put the filter in correctly, too. Of course, I had to throw the filter away, so I was left with a very expensive water pitcher.
I agree with the reviewer who said that the gap on the top is unsanitary -- it is. DO NOT BUY THIS! It is a waste of money.
